Five magazines Teal'c subscribes to.

Five magazines Teal'c subscribes to.

1) He had heard from many reliable sources that Playboy had excellent articles.

2) After the fishing trip with O’Neill, American Angler began to show up in his room. It was only right to repay such a gift with one of equal value. After a consultation with Daniel Jackson and Major Carter, he gladly filled out the card granting O’Neill a two year subscription to Oprah’s magazine.

3) The use of slightly more formal language in The Economist appealed to him but it also helped piece together the various pieces of the grand puzzle of Tau'ri politics. The very idea that so many political, economic, and violent battles were fought over oil was laughable considering he knew there were other, better, energy sources out there. When he mentioned this to Major Carter, a pained look crossed her face and he never mentioned it again.

4) Janet, then Cassie, provided his subscription to People. Teal’c had stumbled across the magazine while recovering from a particularly nasty staff blast that his symbiote was slow to heal. A nurse handed him a stack of what she referred to as “brain candy”. He quirked an eyebrow at the unusual turn of phrase but quickly devoured the entire stack. The idea that a planet could have so many magazines dedicated solely to the lives of people who seemed to have no other function than to be written about in those magazines was a foreign concept to him. Teal’c loved it.

5) Budget Travel was his secret. General Hammond had first supplied him with the subscription and now Walter slipped a copy under his door when it arrived. It was meditation to slowly flip through the pages and see pictures of a world ignorant to the threats from outside its solar system. The world he eagerly wanted to share with Rya’c and Bra’tac.

Teal’c would plot out where he would take them, first maybe London or Paris, then a train ride to Saint Petersburg. Or maybe to see the Great Wall of China, he had seen it from above the planet enough times. He wanted to witness the Alps in person and the wide-open spaces of the Sahara. He wanted to see where Lord of the Rings had been filmed and to dip his toes into the Dead Sea. He wanted to stand in the spot where Martin Luther King had given his Dream speech for it moved him in so many ways. He wanted to simply stand in front of the great Pyramids and know their reality was masked. He would envision the look on Rya’c’s face as he stared at a cathedral for the first time. Teal’c spent hours mapping out these trips, cataloging the best B&Bs and tips on how to really enjoy a spot as a local. Then he would slip the magazine in with the others and wait.

1 and 2 are so funny! 5 is on the sad side, but it gives him pleasure to make the plans anyway. Very nice! :-)

Oh thanks so much! They never really show Teal'c outside of CO (minus the one trip to DC) and I just thought he would be interested in the rest of the planet, especially as I imagine him watching a lot of TV. A lot.

I like these.

Love the People magazine description.

I like the way he maps out a trip like he's planning a mission.

Five magazines Teal'c subscribes to.

1. The Weekly World News. For almost two months after Daniel saw him reading an issue over breakfast in the mess, Teal'c had Daniel absolutely convinced that he took it all seriously. He'd learned early on that his quiet demeanor and restrained speech patterns led people to assume a certain gullibility in him, which he ruthlessly exploited, in part because it gave him some small measure of control in this strange place, and in part because it was very entertaining to torture Daniel Jackson.

2. Entertainment Weekly. While the Jaffa did not have celebrities in the same manner as the Tau'ri, Teal'c was quite aware of the power that story-tellers and entertainers had to transmit cultural information.

3. Star Wars Insider Magazine. It was part of his membership in the Official Star Wars Fan Club, which had been a gift from Major Carter the Christmas after the incident with Orlin. He was touched she had remembered his attachment to the movies, and thought that maybe the gesture was her way of forgiving him for his part in dismissing her claims of Orlin's existence. She renewed it every year despite his protests that he would be more than willing to maintain it himself. He had finally given up when she said, "I like doing it. Just enjoy it." Instead, he subscribed her to Starlog (which he had often seen her leaf through when she took him to the bookstore) so he could return the gesture.

4. Martha Stewart Living. That had been a gift from O'Neill, after Teal'c received permission to move off base. He knew it was intended as a joke, but he maintained it after the initial subscription ran out, in part because he was fascinated by the similarity the periodical's emphasis on presentation and status had to the status-consciousness of the Goa'uld, and in part because he greatly enjoyed O'Neill's confused and occasionally uneasy reactions when he clipped articles and left them in O'Neill's inbox with notes such as, "I believe this color scheme would greatly enhance the ambiance of your recreation room."

5. The Wall Street Journal. He had long since learned to read between the lines of any periodical documenting the political and social climate of the United States, but he was fascinated with the way consumerism and economics was woven into that climate. Resource management he understood, but not at the level of detail involved in the monetary exchanges among the Tau'ri. By the time he was ready to move out of the SGC the second time, he had amassed an impressive portfolio, and was able to liquidate some of his stock and put a down payment on a house. "A house?" Mitchell had asked. "Isn't that pretty... permanent?"

"The Jaffa are my people," Teal'c said, "but I have no home among them. I will always be Teal'c of the Tau'ri to them."

"That sucks, man."

"It is not as I had hoped things would be, but my people are free, and I am comfortable here. It is an acceptable compromise."

"You know, I bet it would be even more acceptable with a plasma T.V."

Teal'c smiled. "Indeed."

Oh my gosh, you have so totally captured Teal'c's sense of humor! I love this. Especially Teal'c clipping out Martha Stewart articles and leaving them for O'Neill. XD

Er...you know how I just reviewed the other one and talked about how much I love your Teal'c?

Yeah, I can't really talk anymore and the girl next door probably thinks I am insane from all the giggling.

Torturing Daniel, clipping Martha Stewart (hee!), amassing a portfolio. This is the sekrit Teal'c that we so seldom get to see. TPTB never knew how to use his character one-tenth as well as you did here.

Thanks so much, Sid. And yeah, while they don't fill in the characters as much as they could, I'm selfishly glad of that to some point, because it means I can do it my way. :)

An avid reader, Teal'c subscribes to many publications. It's not as if there is anything left on the base he hasn't read.

1. Physics Today. Though no one has asked him, he does understand graduate level physics, only the Goa'uld term it Magic 101.

2. Physics Review Letters. He's a member of the American Physical Society in good standing. Actually, he's building his own orbital telescopes and wanted to know about the solutions for the mirrors' warping in zero gravity along with the mechanics of the composite materials used for actuator dampening.

3. The Journal of Accountancy. With the Free Jaffa Nation off to a bad start, he is concerned about waste, fraud, and abuse. So he has instituted the JICPA--Jaffa Institute of Certifed Public Accountants--- to perform audits and root out misconduct in financial statements affecting the new Treasury and its activities. Typically, there is only one solution... at the barrel end of a staff weapon.

4. GateWorld News. He knows that the editor is secretly a Tok'ra with his pulse on the galaxy. It's news reporting at it's finest and most timely. Besides, he likes Livi's science column. www.gateworld.net

5. Variety. If his gig as leader of the Free Jaffa doesn't work out, there's always show biz.

Heh, these are gonzo and fun, and smart!Teal'c is always a fine thing.

I think that Teal'c is a case of still waters run deep. To become a First Prime for a millenia old System Lord and stay there means incredible intelligence. He is also one tough s.o.b. Too bad the show didn't go into it more.

If you like a strong smart Teal'c, may I suggest my on-going fic "You Don't Know Jack!" It was a plot bunny suggesting that in Fragile Balance there was no clone. Jack became his fifteen year old self. All hell breaks loose. Teal'c takes center stage to resolve the situation with a surprising character study of Teal'c. I'm nearing completion.

1. Beautiful Homes and Gardens (A Jaffa can dream, can’t he?)
2. TV Guide
3. People
4. Teen People (until they shut down publication; Teal’c was very disappointed)
5. Mad magazine (O’Neill’s annual Christmas gift)

Thank you! I wonder what replaced Teen People? Maybe something serious like Newsweek?

*looks at above list*

Nah.
