Five times Jack listened to Daniel in the field without question

1) Fifth mission out, curiosity get the better of Jack's judgment. When Daniel starts an explanation about cuneiform--something about you can read it this way or that, or the lines mean something else if it's a Tuesday--Jack just listens. He stands at ease, elbow propped on his gun. He's paying attention, too, but what he really wants to know is how long Daniel can keep this up.

An hour later, Carter's eyes have glazed, and Teal'c is making a career of the perimeter he's walking, and Jack knows Daniel must breathe through his skin. Jack is also damn sure he's never doing this again. But he can't find a way out now, because Daniel is more relaxed than anything Jack's seen since Abydos. Of course, Daniel is still talking by the time he finishes with the wall, and he keeps going during the walk back to the 'gate, and through the 'gate. On the other side, he shuts up and Jack turns, wondering what hit the off switch.

Daniel's got his arms folded and he's staring at his teammates as if they'd just turned him over to Apophis. "You guys don't really care, do you?" Carter stutters, Teal'c lifts an eyebrow, and heat hits Jack's face. Embarrassment at being nailed goes fast to aggression. "What the--I was listening!" Daniel shakes his head, and he looks down and away. "If you were interested, you'd have asked questions," he mutters. He leaves the gate room with his head down. And Jack knows right there that, with Daniel, he is never going to win for losing.

2) "Jack, I'm sure it'll be okay--let me handle this," Daniel says, stepping forward. There are lots and lots of people around the Stargate, with big smiles, bad teeth and not much in the way of clothes. Grass skirts seem to be in style. Which means Jack's not seeing much in the way of weapons. Not unless you count the BO. He is seeing too much of other things, so he steps upwind, and gestures for Daniel to knock himself out on this one.

3) It's a month past Daniel's addiction, and four days since the second time back from Shyla. It's petty, but Jack's happy he got the chance to see her sweat and scream through withdrawal. Payback and bitches and all. But now they've got a new mission and a moody Daniel. And Jack has vowed that if Daniel goes haring off on his own one more time, the man is going to end up in traction. Which is why he's stunned when, on the other side of the 'gate, Daniel turns to him and says, "I'm going to start with the building on the right and do a quick survey. I'll take Teal'c, if you don't mind, to watch my back." Numb, Jack nods, then he turns, meets Carter's startled glance. And now he wants to rip into Shyla all over again because the Daniel who'd go haring off to tilt at windmills and rescue damsels is gone forever.

4) It's insane, but Jack's gotten used to crazy stuff coming out of Daniel's mouth. And Daniel always makes it sound something they really have to do. So he rolls his eyes, takes Daniel's hand. Daniel's holding onto Carter on the other side, and she's got Teal'c. They line up facing the natives, then Daniel starts to chant, "You put your right foot in. You put your right foot out." Somehow, Daniel manages to make the Hokey-Pokey sound serious and important. That's the deal, we show you one of ours for one of yours, and then we can all sit and talk. In a weird way, Jack supposes this does qualify as an Earth ritual. Of sorts. He's just not sure he can keep a straight face, but the crappy spears are a pretty good motivating factor. So are Daniel's sidelong hot glances that promise retribution if Jack cops out on this. And Jack wishes he felt better about using P90s against dirt farmers.

5) The first mission after Sha're's death, Jack knows he's overcompensating. He's trying hard not to, but that empty look hasn't left Daniel's eyes in two weeks. Carter's worse, just about jumping to do anything Daniel asks because Daniel isn't asking for much of anything from anyone. And Teal'c--hell, Teal'c just hovers, trying not to get too close, unable to stray too far. Jack's not sure how much longer Daniel's going to put up with all this concern. They make camp early and Daniel's too quiet, has to be thinking of his dead wife again--still. So Jack sits with him, where he can hear all the stuff that Daniel's not yet able to say.

Heeeee! Hokey pokey! Oh, Daniel, you're brilliant.

And #5 is rather wonderful in a different way.

I completely agree with #3.

I also love the thread of sardonic Jack that runs through these. :D

Yay!!! for these too! All good- these so funny it hurt me:

"the lines mean something else if it's a Tuesday--"

"what he really wants to know is how long Daniel can keep this up."

"Teal'c is making a career of the perimeter he's walking, and Jack knows Daniel must breathe through his skin."

Followed quickly by Ouch/Awww:

"But he can't find a way out now, because Daniel is more relaxed than anything Jack's seen since Abydos."

Then laugh/hurt, laugh/hurt, all entertaining and ring very true to them. Ouchie for changed Daniel in #3, and Jack changing what he wished for.

#5 made me hurt for all of them, esp. this: "because Daniel isn't asking for much of anything from anyone."

And then my *very favorite bit*, the last line. So sad, and so poignant, and so Jack/Daniel.

You rock.

I like the way of turning this prompt on its head. Daniel would never give Jack orders (that Jack could reasonably listen to) but this is how it could work. Thanks.

You just know that it started with Daniel blanking out on what kind of ritual he could show them that wouldn't take hours and things he didn't have with him. And Jack being sarcastic and throwing out a, "So, what now, we do the hokey-pokey?" And that would push Daniel just far enough that he'd do it--take Jack up on the challenge, and it works enough for a ritual since ritual is about symbolic action, so its not just what you do, but how you do it. So, yeah--whole story going on here.

Oh, the first one ending with hurt!Daniel walking away with his head down. Jack learned his lesson, though.

#2 B.O. Bwahahaha!

#3 Oh, excellent. Damsels will just have to remain in distress, and Jack realizes that this is not entirely a good thing.

#4 Hokey-Pokey! I read your little explanation on another comment, and I like the backstory a lot. Sure, it's exactly the kind of thing Jack would come up with!

#5 Jack is listening even though Daniel isn't ready to speak. That's sweet beyond words. :-)
