4. Herbs
The Lucian Alliance people apparently had a long tradition of making beer and distilling it to get a higher alcohol content. Intrigued Brody took a stab at it. Since they had nothing that resembled hops the first batch of beer was not a big hit with the Terrans. But then Lisa Parks suggested using a couple of medicinal herbs to mimic the flavor. “The purpose of the hops is to add a little bitterness to balance the sweet, right? Bitter herbs we've got in abundance.”
This greatly improved the flavor. Although most of the Brits in the crew still found it wanting. The distilled version was harsher than the purple sweet potato vodka, but was a huge hit with the Lucians. And an even bigger hit with the rest of the crew when Lucians demonstrated a traditional drinking game that involved trying to out do each other with crazy dance moves.
They were less amused the following morning when Colonel Young ordered everyone who had been at the still the night before to help clean, “Whatever the heck that is, and I don't want to know, off the ceiling.”
5. Blue Peach Mangoes
When they came out of stasis the first planet they came across had a soft fruit that was sort of a cross between peaches and mangoes. Aside from it being blue.
Brody brewed up a batch of his schnapps for the 'We're Awake' party and it garnered much praise. “Best you done so far.” Young told him halfway through the evening.
Brody and Becker kept to themselves the fact that all of the fruit had gone into food supplies and the schnapps was brewed from the leftover skin and seeds. Every trade had its secrets after all.
