Four Times Vala Lied and One Time She Didn’t
2. “I’m fine with the way things went. What we did was for the best. It had to be done.” SG-1 needed to hear that. But inside her was a voice so loud, so clangorous, so piercing that she was astonished they could not hear it. “Foul!” it said. “Foul! Unnatural! Undeserving! What kind of a mother are you, that you worked to kill your own child?!”
3. “No, that’s okay. I know it’s an illusion, and it can’t possibly hurt me. You go ahead, Muscles!” Yes, her mind knew that the curtain of fire was not really there, that this was just another test of resolve on the way to the prize, but her body knew differently. It could still feel the terrible consuming heat of the prior’s fire, the agonized pain of seared lungs, the cloying choking smell of burning hair and flesh. Daniel was too consumed with curiosity to be concerned with anything but what lay behind that roiling curtain. Mitchell had already forged on ahead. Sam was using all her powers of concentration to overrule her senses and instincts with her intellect, but Muscles would watch, and he would know. Best to send him through now.
4. “You’re right, Daniel. I was just having a joke at your expense.” And as long as he let her keep her back to him, maybe he’d believe it, and she could keep her dignity. There was a weird sense of déjà-vu to this whole situation, although she knew she’d never offered herself like that before.
5. “You know, I never really had this before. It’s nice to have friends.” Cassie, who was in town for the weekend, put the heaping spoonful of whipped cream and fudge covered ice cream in her mouth and grinned in agreement.
Sam stopped riffling through the bag from Victoria’s Secret, where she was trying to retrieve her receipt to put it in her wallet, and took in the sight of Vala and Cassie and the food court table with its sundaes and crumpled paper napkins. It had been so long since a Girls Day Out had meant more than two girls. Not since Janet.
“Yeah,” she agreed. This is nice.”
She gave up on the receipt and started in on her own sundae.
So true, she thought. So true.

“We would otherwise be here all day,” Teal’c answers.
“Okay, good point. You start, Sam.”
“Well, she lied about liking the earrings I gave her for her birthday. She hasn’t worn them even once.”
“A social lie? A little white lie?”
“Hey, I offered to take her with me to exchange them if she didn’t like them. All she had to do was say so.”
Daniel wags his head back and forth. “Yeahhh, maybe she thought it was more polite not to say anything.”
“Is excessive politeness one of Vala Mal Doran’s attributes?”
“Ha!” Sam laughs.
“Ah, no, maybe not. My turn? She lied about those charges on my credit card. Victoria’s Secret? I think I would remember if I’d been shopping there recently.”
“Did she show you what she bought?”
“You’re not funny, Sam. Teal’c?”
“I have not seen her undergarments.”
“Ha! Count your blessings. No, I meant it’s your turn.”
“She lied about having sexual relations with you.”
“She wishes. Wait. Why are you looking at Sam? Oh, you’re….”
“She what?”
“Indeed.”
“That little….”
“I believe the word is ‘minx’, Colonel Carter.”
“No, no, no. That isn’t the word I was thinking of.”
“Down, Sam. Who’s got a good number 4?”
“Hell, I should’ve led off with this one. ‘Protect a fellow sister’ my ass.”
“I cannot wait.”
“She lied about how long she was a host to Qetesh.”
“Why would she do that?”
“Think about it, Daniel. You don’t get it?”
“Nor do I.”
“That’s because you aren’t women.”
“Oh! In other words, she lied about her age.”
“And asked me not to rat her out, the little….”
“Rat?”
“Something along rodential lines, anyway.”
“Okay, what about one time that Vala told the truth? Anyone? Bueller?”
“As many as one?”
“Good one, Teal’c. Well, shall we see what the rodent in question has to say for herself?”
Teal’c unties the knot at the back of Vala’s neck and she spits out the gag furiously. “You talk about me being rude! Talking about me like I wasn’t even in the room! Untie me! Untie me right now!”
“Can we put the gag back in?” Sam asks.
“You are all going to pay for this!” Vala shrieks right before Teal’c muffles her again.
“And there’s our one time Vala spoke the truth, I’m afraid. We’re going to pay and pay and pay….”
“Conceal your credit cards well, Daniel Jackson.”
“I’ve got your back, Daniel.”
“My back? What about yours and Teal’c’s?”
“This was after all your idea.”
“Yeah, Daniel, it was entirely your idea, after all.”
“You rats!”

Vala had to have felt so much more than she allowed to show. But then that is her nature, to work tirelessly to keep it light on the surface, no matter the darkness within. I think she and Jack would "get" each other that way.
