(Anonymous) 2009-01-09 01:34 am (UTC)(link)kawalsky. jack lost the only guy he felt he could talk to about what it's like to lead a SG team.
daniel. his life got complicated every time he died. mostly from the paperwork.
janet. jack felt they lost the heart of the SGC when they lost her.
skaara. even though daniel insists he and the others of abydos aren't "technically dead, just moved to a higher plain." jack regrets not spending more time with him.

*sniffles* Especially Janet.

Five people Jack wishes he could have saved
2. SG-10. Because “never leave a man behind” never sounded more hollow to him than then.
3. Daniel. The Nox, Oma, even Daniel himself seemed to have it down better than Jack.
4. Kawalsky. Every time he looks at the Tok’ra, a little something inside him said “if you could just have kept him restrained long enough...”
5. Sam. He wasn’t there when Woolsey dropped the bomb on her, but even though her team was, he wondered if it was good enough.

2. For the program: Kawalsky. Reality and quantum shifts aside, who knows how the program would have been shaped if there'd been one more officer who really understood what gate travel was like from the very beginning.
3. For Sam: Any one of those alien men that might have been the one to really understand her.
4. For Daniel and for Teal'c: Sha're. They handle it better than he would have, better than he did, but he wishes they didn't have to.
5. For himself: Daniel. Oh, he's done his fair share of Daniel saving. But it's the failures (and the possibility of a permanent one) that keeps him up at night.

And, please, no permanent Daniel-saving failures. *crosses fingers*

Five people Jack wishes he could have saved.
Janet. For all the times that she saved all of them she deserved at least one of her own. Jack still half expects to see his favorite Napoleonic power monger whenever he walks into the SGC infirmary. It stings every single time when he remembers she's gone.
Charlie. No, not Jack's son, because that Charlie is a given. No, this Charlie is the broken little boy the Re'tu sent to warn Earth that took the name of Jack's son. Jack wishes sometimes that Janet had been able to fix him herself so they didn't have to send him off to the Tok'ra. And whenever he thinks about that there is always a little flicker of want flickering around the edges. But like so many other things, Jack buries it back down deep.
Thor. Jack thinks often about Thor and about demise of the Asgard. He wished that his DNA had been the key to fix their cloning problem. Some days when Jack is in a silly mood he imagines taking Thor to his cabin to go fishing. The though of Thor in a lure-laden fishing hat is almost enough to make any of his dreary Pentagon days a little lighter.
Daniel. When Jack looks at the Daniel of today there is almost no trace of the gentle, curious soul that first cracked the cover stone code. Daniel has hardened in body and spirit. Sometimes when Jack waxes philosophical in his own mind, he wonders if that change is a good or bad thing. And sometimes Jack will even allow himself to admit that he really misses that gentle part of Daniel. But it's not gone completely, Jack gets glimpses late in the night as Daniel sleeps beside him when his face is soft and relaxed and gone are the tensions of the day. And Jack hopes that someday that the universe will finally be done with Daniel and under Jack's patient nurturing that the old Daniel will come back out. Someday.

a little flicker of want
Yeah, Jack would've kept Re'tu!Charlie if he could. No doubt about it. And bought him a dog.

Thor in a fishing hat! Awesome!
It looks like we all wanted Kawalsky to live. :)
