These are all very nice, in a heart-breaky sort of way. Except for the last, which is very sweet.

You've expanded and expounded on that very beautifully. :-)
p.s. Yay for Daniel planning!

I was never big on Jack and Laira, but you've written Jack with such yearning that I found myself loving that scenario ayway. Really, really gorgeous imagery in the last line of number one.
And number four! Oh, Jack. And I love that you wrote it not to the exclusion of having eventually moved on with his life regardless, because he would have to eventually, but of course he'll never totally let go. Daniel would understand if he did run across it, I think -- but it's so Jack to lock all of that up anyway.
Number three was wonderful in it's brevity. Enough said, right? There was a fic I read, and I can't remember what it was called, or who wrote it, that I would love to link you two, about Jack retiring to Atlantis to be with Daniel. I'll have to find it again.
And the last two lines of number five. Yes.

It was a flying city. That was damn cool, and even after all these years Jack was still a little let down that he hadn’t gotten to see the inside. Plus, how could you not like the Nox?
2. The thing Jack liked about Bra’tac – well, no, there were a lot of things he liked about Bra’tac, but the thing he had grown to appreciate even more over the years was that the man just did not understand old. Jack thought about packing it up and moving to Dakara. More than once. He’d wasted a lot of time, but Bra’tac was a hell of a mentor, if Teal’c was a fair estimate. Yeah, Jack wasn’t as sharp as he used to be, but he didn’t think it was too late to start learning to forget old.
3. Thor had hinted, more than once, that the Ida galaxy could use someone from the good old Milky Way hanging around, shaking things up, shooting off some fantastically stupid ideas. Jack had been, at times, more than a little tempted. The food situation would have been a problem, though.
4. It wasn’t so much a want to retire there, because ‘want’ implied a degree of possibility, so much as a wish. A feeling he woke up with sometimes after hazy red-gold dreams, the smell of the desert lingering long moments after the image had faded away.
He really had wanted it once, had actually come so close to drafting the paperwork to make it happen, in the year Daniel was gone. But it had just been one thing after the other that year. The gate always found some way to draw him back right as Jack was considering walking away from it entirely, until one morning he took the elevator down to 24 and the universe changed.
They lost Abydos and got Daniel back in exchange. It wasn’t a fair trade, but it was a good one, and if he could go back Jack wouldn’t…if he had to do it again…. It happened. Nothing else to say.
Sometimes he still wished, though.
5. When it came right down to it, the only planet Jack really wanted to retire to was Earth. He’d move up to the cabin full time, for a while; bide his time puttering around, get in enough fishing to hold him over, re-learn how to sleep until noon, and then leave it to Cassie as a wedding present, the way his great-grandfather had built it as a wedding gift, his grandmother had passed it to him when he married Sara, the way she’d pass it on to one of her kids. He’d retire officially and then wait for the rest of the team to catch up, because it would never be rest with any one of them still in the field. And then he’d retire for real.
He’d get a house with a big, sunny yard and a swing set and lots of bedrooms. Teal’c would have his own to crash out in for weeks at a time when he was on-world visiting, and Daniel would very slowly take over the study and throw himself into that revised history of human civilization he’d have published posthumously, and Sam and Cameron would bring the baby over on weekends and holidays and long afternoons just because. And that would be enough.

#4 is my favorite, I think, but #5 sounds wonderful (especially the Danielness!) and can be obtained, which is key. :-)

I always get a kick out of coming up with a similar response to someone else, and we got two of them! Doo-do-doo-do...eeerie. ; )
Thanks so much!

It's like people are afraid to admit that jack is getting old. Totally like how you handled it in this part though; he recognizes it and wants to find a way to not feel his age.

Re: Five planets Jack would like to retire to
I know of some authors who are very aware of it, and some who ignore it entirely. It does seem to be coming up more, recently, though. Rightfully.

The Nox homeworld. Because you've gotta love those guys. It would be safe and peaceful, and some days that's all he really wants.
Basically, any planet with lots of fishing could be a paradise. The occasional, actual fish would be a bonus. And if they make good beer there, he'll put in his papers tomorrow.
Bizarro world. Where goodbye means hello, and no means yes. Oh, wait. Nah, too much like dealing with politicans. Scratch that idea.
Asgard home world? He's practically an icon there. Maybe there's a statue somewhere. Be nice to be appreciated, to be able to do no wrong. On the other hand, Carter's opinion of the food had to be taken into account. Better not.
What's that, three? Okay, okay, how about Atlantis? Yes, city, not a planet, but the planet comes with. He's got the Ancient gene and Atlantis... Not much of a retirement, actually. But, old warhorse, here. Maybe a retirement where he could still be useful and even necessary might be just the thing. Leave it on the list.
Number five is easy. Easiest thing ever. Whatever planet Daniel wants to be on, that's the one that Jack wants to be on, too. He wants Daniel in his home, in his bed, in his life. Come to think of it, it'll be a lot like living on Bizarro World.

There are some fandoms in which the best writing is in the slash side of things. I've been lucky with Stargate because there is so much good gen fic. Lately, there isn't much genfic at all in Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Re: Five planets Jack would like to retire to.
I never do read the gen stories. If I started reading those, too, I'd never have time for real, actual book reading. And that would be criminal!

Sid, lovely as ever. Jack speaks to you so clearly, I'm surprised that Daniel isn't jelous. :)

5 Planets
2. The planet where men are sex toys. He figures he has a few good years left in him...and a stash of Viagra.
3. The planet where he once had that encounter with the ...oh he's not saying... it never made the reports and it certainly isn't going to now... heh heh heh.
4. The planet where the natives thought he was sent by the gods. He's always known he's god's gift...and now he has a chance to prove it.
5. The planet where he's carved out a domain. As soon as he can, he will retire there and run the place the way it should be run. Now that he's had a taste of "being the Man" he's discovered he likes it. And there will be no brain dead sychophants in Congress to stop him. Hail Caesar O'Neill!

The inhabitants on Moon-ville weren't technologically advanced. Except in one way: they built wings. Big, eight-meter wings built out of some alloy or wood or something (to be honest, Jack had stopped paying attention once he'd seen those babies in action), that could be strapped onto humans, who could then fly. Like a bird.
Jack spent thirty exhilarating minutes pretty much just gliding from the top of the mountain where the Stargate was located, right down to the plains below. And then half a day, laboriously trudging back up again. But he'd seen what the locals did. Watched how they dipped and soared, like giant birds.
He really wanted the chance to try out those wings again, and learn how to use them properly.
#2: P3X-626: Tropical paradise. Step off the Stargate and onto the brightest, whitest, most perfect beach seen outside of any travel-brochure. This one he mostly dreams about when the weather's changing and his oncoming rheumatism raises its ugly head.
#3: P82-298: Ancient Central. Once upon a time, this planet had apparently been a central planet for the Ancients, and they'd built a big - no: enormous - city. They'd visited it briefly with Jonas Quinn, and it'd been filed away as uninteresting, but Jack wouldn't mind living there - despite the heat and the humidity. If for no other reason than he would happily put Daniel up while he spent his weekends and holidays digging through any archaeologist's wet dream.
#4: Atlantis. Okay, not really the name of the planet, because nobody'd gotten around to doing that. Still: Atlantis. It'd be nice, Jack figures, to go live there. He could make a living out of ferrying people and goods to and from the main-land, and spend his days playing with the Athosian children or fishing with the Athosian men.
Hell, he's even started drawing up plans for a cabin, built on the main-land. For vacations, and extended fishing-trips.
#5: Earth. Home sweet home. It's got its perks, Jack has to admit. It's got people. It's got all his friends. It's nice and familiar - and if he hadn't known about the close calls it's had in the past, he might even say it was safe.
Mostly though, it's already got a nice, pre-built cabin by a lake with no fish in it. It's got cable, so he can get Simpsons and hockey and History channel whenever he wants. And it's got the people he love.
He doesn't know which place he'll chose yet. Why should he? There's years left in him yet. Years!
And at any rate, there are people in his life it's going to ultimately depend on.

Make sure you let your flist know it's here, though! It's awesome to get new responses to these early prompts, but I worry that people won't know they're here, even with the pointer you put (thank you!) on the big prompts post.

Yes, Jack, years and years. And as long as Daniel's there, it'll be perfect. :-)

I think Jack could be happy almost anywhere. He has the gift of making friends (or of convincing them to come with him!), and a nice appreciation for the simple pleasures of life. :-)

And Jack, I can never get enough of Jack, not really. And Moon-ville, brilliant idea. though I would never do that, I'm really afraid of heights.
Yay You! *hugs your word count*
