Five Time Vala Didn't Want to Steal Anything

1. When she came home from the village crying to her mother, full of the awful things Trinka had said about her beloved father. her mother sat her down and told her exactly what Jacek was and how he earned his living. Vala vowed that she would never, ever, take anything from anyone. Ever.

2. When she was finally freed from Qetesh. She promised herself that she would never again take anything that belonged to anyone else.

3. She didn't want to steal a ship, she honestly told herself she was only borrowing it for just a while. Until she could save her adopted people. Then it would go right back to it's proper owner.

4. After she barely escaped from the Tau'ri, she forced herself not to steal anything for a whole week. Just to make sure she could do it.

5. When she realized how many people were just waiting for her to screw up once again. And how deeply grateful she was to the handful who were betting she wouldn't.

1. "But Mommy said stealing is bad." Vala's stomach didn't feel good.

"Well, see," said her father, "we're not stealing the necklace, honey, we're recycling it."

Vala loved her daddy, loved it when he came swooping in with his presents and his hugs and she saved everything he ever gave her in a special box. She used to wish that he would come more often. Sometimes she even wished that she could go with him. She never thought her wish would come true like this and sometimes she thought it was her fault her mother had died. If she hadn't wished so hard to be with her dad then her mom would still be alive and Adria wouldn't be her new mother.

"Oh for Cronus' sake, Jacek, quit coddling the stupid brat." Leaning down, Adria shook a finger in Vala's face. "If you don't go in there and take that necklace, your father won't love you any more."

Vala stole the necklace.

2. The man her father sold her to ordered her to steal a letter from a guest of the house. If she did it, that man and his family would lose standing as well as their fortune once his involvement in a certain plot was revealed. If she didn't steal it,Vala would be beaten and her food withheld for days. Although she's getting used to that sort of treatment, it doesn't make it any easier to bear and she fears the day that the punishment will kill her. She stole the letter and started planning a way to escape from slavery.

3. Vala's bored voice gave the orders. Her hands waved impatiently. She could feel the sneer on her face. On Q'tesh's face. The Goa'uld usurper watched with satisfaction as her Jaffa snatched the crying children from terrified families. Never had Vala railed so frantically against the creature that held her hostage in her own body as she did that day. When she realized that Q'tesh's amusement at her efforts resulted in more children than necessary being chosen, Vala retreated into herself and didn't come out again for months.

4. The legends were wrong. There was nothing here. These people had even less than she did. The one thing they had, the one thing, was that fifth rate holy relic which brought the rare pilgrim and which would have garnered Vala no more than a few coins on the black market. Newly freed from the prison of her flesh, often mistaken by angry vengeful people for the Goa'uld that had used her, Vala was desperate and starving but there was no way she could do it. She gave her last coin to a hollow-eyed urchin at the door to the shrine and returned to the gate.

5. The legends were right. There was so much here. With the Ori defeated, SG-1 finally had time to search for wonders other than weapons and some of this technology might possibly be adapted for healing. The gadgetry was scattered throughout the baubles stockpiled here, so much of it sparkly and shiny and tempting. Vala watched her teammates move around the cavern. Sam was excited over the machinery, Daniel over the historical significance. Mitchell was getting a kick out of watching them both and Teal'c seemed amused by them all.Vala dropped something heavy and golden that twinkled with red gems that could have been a tiara or a necklet. She didn't need trinkets. She already had everything she needed.
