Five things their teammates wanted Ronon and Teyla to understand about Earth

1. That, although people generally would band together in a crisis, they preferred not to, and weren’t all that great about it, and so telling them about the latest alien threat was more likely to end in mass panic and rioting than a coordinated response against it. Which, yes, seemed kind of impractical, but that was what you got when you tried to keep a secret from six billion people.

2. That individually people could be generous, courageous, wonderful human beings, but that collectively they were bastards. More the first part than the second, although only the second part worked as an explanation when they found out about things like millions of children starving in Africa, and wars that wrecked thousands of lives while no-one helped.

3. That if Ronon and Lorne kept kissing in public there – even in San Francisco – they were going to wind up either getting into a brawl and arrested, or with Lorne losing his job. John really wished he hadn’t had to remind Lorne of that as well, although Lorne seemed to find it hilarious. No wonder he’d fit into Atlantis so well – he was clearly as crazy as the rest of them.

4. That clowns were the root of all evil, and the product of a sick, twisted mind, perpetuated by delusional parents who didn’t understand their traumatising effect on small children. Okay, maybe that one was just John.

5. That, because it was still there, because they’d never had their entire population wiped out or their cities burned to the ground, Earth was special for all the little things: ice cream and popcorn, carnival rides, scientific conferences, access to as many marker pens or bullets as they needed, sunny days and cats and dogs in parks. And that, for all that Earth had all of those things, Atlantis was special, because it had Teyla and Ronon, Torren and Kanaan and Keller and Radek and Lorne, John’s marines and Rodney’s science teams and the Athosians on the mainland. And that they’d never give either one up.

Deep, deep truths in the first two, and I like crazy!Lorne in #3.

#4 is very snicker-worthy *g*, and #5 is just plain lovely. *sighs*

Five very well chosen "things" mixing funny with very earnest problems.
And I like Lorne's description very much: No wonder he’d fit into Atlantis so well – he was clearly as crazy as the rest of them. *g*

I like #5 the best, I think - there's a lot of weird Earth-hatred in this fandom, and it's nice to see it written about with affection.

Loved them all, I agree with them all and well, #3 was just the best one.

The first two are just... ouch. Yes.

And the Ronon/Lorne one is cute and sweet, but a little sad too.

3 and 4!!!!! ((GASP))) That's me laughing MAO. First of all, Lorne and Ronon ... heck, Lorne and just about anybody, is happy-making. And crazy ... yeah, he fit in perfectly. Which is why I am always so darn pissed that he wasn't in that last scene of Enemy at the Gates. He belongs there much more than Amelia ... and no, I have nothing against Amelia. She just doesn't belong there.

And 4, because I share John's intense dislike of clowns. Frightening ... and they keep sending them in! ;-)

And the others, lovely, sad and true, all of them.

Yeah, that is what they'd want Ronon and Teyla to know.

I love the first two; I think that's something they would have to try to explain, and I'm not sure how well Ronon and Teyla would understand it given their very different frame of reference. Three and four are both hilarious and I love the image of Ronon and Lorne kissing in San Francisco.

I wonder if Teyla and Ronon might not be so surprised by the poverty of Third World nations and earthside warfare, given what we've seen of the darker side of Pegasus. Greed and hostility don't seem to have vanished between the various populations just because they have a common enemy in the Wraith. Though I suppose I can see Rodney and John expecting them to be horrified since their teammates are noble and selfless, and they weren't present for some occasions like that deal with Ronon killing his former commander.

I can maybe see DADT being a problem for Lorne if he's kissing Ronon in public and someone from the Air Force sees, but who's going to start a brawl over two guys making out in San Francisco? Particularly when that would mean getting in a fight with Ronon?

I sort of wonder if, you know, Teyla and Ronon kind of only get exposed to the first world part of Earth, given who they spend their time with. And, sure, inter-planetary hositlity still exists, but it seems like, as a general rule, one planet's population gets on okay, so the combination of the two makes it weird that the Earth people, who clearly have the resources, based on Atlantis, don't help.

I'm pretty sure there's always someone, even in San Francisco. Even with Ronon and Lorne, and possibly more so, since they don't come across as stereotypically gay.

I really really like this one. An interesting mix of good and bad, and a lot of feeling.
