Cam Mitchell gave him a hard time about the scruff on his face. He was going to shave it off after missing his ride to Atlantis, but then he realized, 'Hey, I'm not military, & Mitchell's just jealous!'

From the moment Jack arrived back on Abydos with a certain Doctor Captain, Daniel could see the spark between them. But beyond the Colonel's distaste for scientists, Jack would never endanger Sam's career by pursuing a relationship. At the time, Daniel was in love with Sha're & then searching for Sha're & then mourning Sha're. But at some point, he realized he was living like a monk. He & Sam had become really good friends, so he said to himself, "Hey, Jack may not be able to date Sam, but I could." On their next down time, he called her & asked casually if she wanted to catch a movie. They did, & they had dinner after, Dutch treat, of course. The next time, he invited her to a concert, for which he already had tickets. When he tried to pay for dinner the 3rd time, & Sam said, "Daniel, it's not like we're...oh, G*d, we..." He just smiled, & she let him pay. When he pulled up in front of her house, he got out & walked her to her door. He worked up the courage to lean in for a kiss.

An opportunity to participate in a dig with an old acquaintance came up. Jack didn't want to let him go for a month, because Hammond would likely keep SG-1 on earth which meant Jack would be stuck doing paperwork – or with a temporary fourth. When Jack kept saying no, Daniel finally said, "You know, you can tell me what do off world..."

"Not that you ever listen to me anyway..."

Ignoring Jack, he said, "BUT, I'm not one of your military subordinates, & you CAN'T order me to stay here if I want to go. I can quit any time."

"Yeah, you said that about coffee, & we all know how well that worked out." But he didn't say anything when Daniel told the General later that he'd be gone for a month.

Daniel looked around at those gathered. Suddenly, he realized, he was the only person in the room - other than the servers - who wore a suit vs. dress uniform. It hit him that, though he wore BDUs every day on base & could shoot a berretta with a modicum of accuracy was the most fit he had ever been in his life, & though his hair was the shortest it had been since he was born & all his best friends but one were USAF officers, he really *wasn't* a military person. And these people had been serving their country - serving HIM - & risking their lives a lot longer than he had been associated with the Stargate program, even back to Vietnam. And he felt overwhelmingly proud to be associated with them.

"You can't come."

"Um...why not?"

Jack sighed in that way that always made it appear he had gas, but Daniel waited for an answer.

"You just can't, okay?"

"No, it's not okay. Why can't I come with you?"

"Daniel." (i.e., just take my word for it)

"Jack." (i.e., when have I *ever* just taken your word for it?)

The Colonel relented but only after receiving an equally puzzling look from Sam. Teal'c just gave him the eyebrow.

"It's a military-only thing, Daniel. I'm sorry, but that's...well, that's just how it is, this time."

"Oh." Daniel & Jack stared at each other until Daniel looked over at Sam, who was avoiding his gaze. "So even though I'm..."

"Yeah. I'm sorry. If it were up to me..." Jack clutched Daniel's shoulder.

"I understand."

"You do?" Jack sounded so hopeful.

"No, not really, but okay. I get it. No civilians."

Daniel walked away, his shoulders slumped and his head down. After all he had done... He felt just like he was twelve, & none of the other kids wanted him around - unless they wanted to cheat off him. Of course, back then he was just a pre-teen genius dwarfed by 200-pound linemen & over-6-foot-tall basketball jocks. But it felt the same. He wasn't in the "in" crowd yet again.
