Five ways John Sheppard went crazy (or alternately, didn't when anyone else would have)

1. Waking up the Wraith would drive anyone crazy. It’s an enormous responsibility to bear. Elizabeth thinks that’s why John takes so many risks. His military record doesn’t indicate any special tendency towards heroism, so she thinks he has some insane idea that he needs to atone, with his life if necessary. She hopes it never comes to that.

2. Having Rodney McKay on your team would make anybody crazy, but John seems to handle it astonishingly well. Elizabeth hates to admit it, but when John takes one of his famous huge risks, as she prays for his safety and success, part of her fear is the dread of having to reassign McKay to a new leader.

3. John will never be able to beat Teyla at her own game. He spends hours and hours training with her, and ends up sweaty and bruised and panting and flat on his back. Elizabeth thinks that would drive most men crazy, especially military men. The fact that it doesn’t seem to bother John at all tells Elizabeth everything she needs to know about his feelings towards women. The respect he shows her is genuine, and he extends it to women who aren’t in an authority position over him. It’s kind of sweet, actually, considering the way women tend to throw themselves at him.

4. Having the life sucked out of you by a Wraith, and then, astonishingly, given back, should make any normal human being go batshit bonkers. It should! John was a little quieter than usual, right after it happened, but he seemed to be pretty much taking it all in stride. How the hell did he do that? It was driving Elizabeth crazy trying to figure that one out. Why, even McKay had been bouncing off the walls with more than his usual manic energy…although, strangely, he hadn’t been biting the heads off of the scientists working under him, which she would’ve expected to be something that would increase when Rodney was under pressure…huh. Wait just a minute!

5. John was clearly insane. Crazy in love, even more crazy to think that he was hiding it. But the nuttiest part? Being in a relationship with Rodney McKay would obviously drive any human being insane, but the only sign of John’s insanity was the fact that he was in a relationship with Rodney.

Elizabeth’s head was spinning and she wondered if banging it against her desk would make it stop. But that was just crazy talk.

And why was she giggling?
