Okay, I'll be the virginal sacrifice to your new thread... or something like that...
But this is more of a "Did I?" than a "How To". I posted a couple of responses to the current 5 things thread, "5 Things Sam knew about Cam before he came to the SGC". It looks like I did it right, but if you could double-check, I would appreciate it.
I understand that if you are planning to respond to the same prompt, you may not want to read it until you have completed your list, so if you don't want to do it now, I understand. If you check it before it all becomes "live" though, I'd appreciate it! Thanks.
I can't see the responses for the prompts 5.01 and 5.02. Is that because no one submitted a list for those? Or am I looking in the wrong place? The links for the responses for 5.03 through 5.10 [or how many there are] are all on the same page. I would assume it was because nobody turned in a list for .01 and .02, except there was another with no response that WAS shown on the page.
I've just looked at the responses to Prompts 5.01 and 5.02, and I'm seeing them there under "Comments." Take another look, and let me know if you can see too, okay? They may have been posted/unscreened after you looked in, as people will occasionally write to prompts after the unveiling "deadline"...
*growls* Stupid LJ, making me retype everything. Anyhow, I didn't see this in the welcome post/rules-unless I'm going blind-are you planning to do a blast from the past/catch up theme where say either during the summertime or christmas/new year period we can participate in the prompts we missed? Coz that would be cool.
Actually, there's no reason you can't write to any prompt at any time, as far as I know. (We Never Close!) We'll do our best to point people to new responses to previous prompts as they appear, and hey, feel free to rattle our mod-cages, mention the fact in your own LJ, tell the Debrief, and so on....
Of course it's totally fine by us to post in your journal! We'd love if you'd post in both places, but we understand if you're not comfortable posting to the comm. To join in without posting the whole response here, just post a comment to the prompt post with a link to the fic/list in your journal.
We do ask two things, which amount to the protocol, I guess *g*:
(1) Keep your journal entry locked until we've unveiled the comment responses here.
(2) Link back to the comm by username sg1_five_things so that interested/curious people can find us, and link to the prompt post so that people can see the other responses that were posted.
Will post some example code separately, since I'm afeared of mucking this comment up with lj-raw if I do it wrong *g* ...
Then you'd just swap the '33974' for the number of the particular prompt entry you're responding to. Or swap the whole url for the 'link' tag at the bottom left of the entry (right-click, choose 'Copy Link Location', and paste that over the http://...html in the example).
Instead of the word 'here', you could also put the prompt number:
Not so much a 'how to' as a posting clarification question, but: on the new 'second chance on older prompts' post -- should responses to separate prompts be posted in separate comments?
Specifically -- I have partial replies for three separate prompts. Three comments?
Hi, and thanks for asking such a useful question *VBG*
Yes, please, if you're writing responses to separate prompts, please post them as separate comments. That will make them easier for people to find, and easier for us to link to if we ever do a compilation list of links to the new responses.
And (you probably already know this, but I'll put it here just in case) there's a separate entry up for both partial prompts amnesty and new responses to old prompts:
I have strange 5 Things response sort of writing itself. The jury is still out if I’m going to have the nerve to put this one up or not. LOL. But just in case, it has about 300 words to the 1-5 response and an aprox 300-word epilogue.
Do you have a word limit rule for 5 Things responses? Is this one too long?
What is the LJ word limit for a single comment (will I have to divide this into two comments)?
Is it ok to do a 5 Things response and have an epilogue/afterward as part of the response?
Thanks for any help. I looked around here, and couldn’t find the answers, so I figured I should ask.
Do you have a word limit rule for 5 Things responses? Is this one too long?
We have no word limit for 5 Thingses. This one isn't too long at all.
What is the LJ word limit for a single comment (will I have to divide this into two comments)?
LJ comments are limited to 4,300 characters, including spaces. You can split your list into as many replies as you need to. LJ will give you a message if your comment is too large. I think at the most, you'd need two comments. (Another LJ'er just posted 1,900 words over three comments.)
Is it ok to do a 5 Things response and have an epilogue/afterward as part of the response?
Epilogues are fine. In fact, epilogues are fun!
I can always check it out after you post it. And if it doesn't come out the way you want it to (for any reason) you can always delete it and do it over. *g*
Hi. I've just taken the plunge and posted my first ever Five Things thing ... Five things which disappointed Jack O'Neill. I hope I've done it correctly. Any chance of letting me know if I have? Thanks
It looks great: the only way in which it doesn't look exactly like the majority of the others (though it's still perfectly readable) is that there isn't a blank line between thingses. But it is, overall, entirely readable, so, cool! We're so glad you took the plunge!
i just posted to the five things sg1 did as kids but it wouldn't let me rply to my own commetn as it ws too large to post in one go. So i did it separately but not sure if that will work as they might not appear together in the comment list.
As a matter of fact, they do! *g* But if you're ever in doubt about that (owing to LJ's 4300-character cutoff in replies) just put the prompt you're replying to at the top of your list continuation, so readers can keep track...
Some time ago I fell in love with five-things-fics, and now I hope to post something to one of the prompts. But what I'm asking here is this: a while back I've written a couple of five-things-fics (to my own prompts - it was before I discovered this community), posted them in my LJ and AlphaGate archive. Is there a way to link them (http://ernutet.livejournal.com/tag/fivethings) to this comm, or is that only for the responses to the comm's prompts? I'm still getting around in the technical waters of LJ. Thanks!
Glad you asked! Go here (http://community.livejournal.com/sg1_five_things/40037.html) to Five Thingses Elsewhere and add your link. There's also a link to this under 'Other Stuff' at the top of the comm page: http://community.livejournal.com/sg1_five_things/
Hiya, Here to check prompts for set 43 and I can't find them. I get an error message when I click on the link. Am I too early? Am I doing something wrong? Is it just me? (It probably is. Starting_gate will confirm that) :-)
Sorry to be a pain, but I got interrupted between posting parts 1 and 2 to the Five Times Daniel Thought He Was Going to Die prompt. Would you mind just checking that they posted OK? Thanks (and sorry for the hassle)
Hello! I'll be posting for the first time this round and I was just wondering if we are allowed to post to other comms as well as our own journals once all the responses have been unlocked? Thanks!
We have a mirror community on dw: sg-five-things, whcih has all the announcement posts, so you'll know when a new set of prompts goes up, or is opened for commenting on.
So I just posted a response that ends up in three comments (two comments for one "thing" that turned into a longer story). Should I put the two comment story as an entry in my lj instead with a link? And er...how do I link it if it's going to be locked...er...
You can either post your response to your journal (and preferably leave it locked until we unscreen on Monday!) and leave a comment on the prompt post with a link to the entry, or you leave multiple comments on the prompt post (in which case it's probably a good idea to number them in the subject). It's up to you. :)
ETA: The way you've posted it now is fine. Multiple comments are quite common. Thanks for writing!
I have a question about sequals. Is it ok, once the responses have been unscreened, to take the little fic and expand it to make it 5 longer fics? Also, is i ok to do sequals to them?
May be stupid questions but I wanted to check before I did just in case!
It's your fic; you can do whatever you like with it. :)
For sequels, if you're writing a sequel here in response to a new set of prompts, it might be a good idea to link to the original stories. If you're writing a sequel to fic you posted here and posting the sequels elsewhere (i.e., they weren't written in in response to prompts here), then you can certainly leave a comment on your original entry linking to the sequels so that other people can find them. Does that make sense?
I just posted something for challenge # 145.04 - Five Children That Were Born on Novus. I posted it with a link back to my LJ where I locked it for my eyes only, because I wasn't certain how to do a custom lock to coincide with the unveiling of the prompts. I looked under the help FAQ # 24 about security levels, but it's a bit of gobble-gook for me. Any help on how to properly lock future fics would be appreciated. Thanks,
Hi! I don't think there's any way to do a custom lock of the kind you describe. Which is too bad--that would be very convenient! It's Monday now, though, so go ahead and unlock your post whenever you like. I'll probably wait a couple more hours for stragglers and put up the unscreened response post this afternoon (Eastern), but I'm not going to squawk if you unscreen your specific response a bit early. (You can also wait until you see the unscreened response post go up--it's up to you.)
Can you see the response here? I'm afraid that was the only prompt that received a response this time, so it might be that you're not seeing anything because nothing is there.
