Five things Carmen would have done growing up on Destiny

She would have captured Rush’s heart, along with everyone else’s. She would have been the friendliest of babies, willing to be held by anyone, but when she grew old enough to express a wordless preference, Rush was the one she would extend her arms out to. His face would light up whenever she entered a room. Even when her father was the one to bring her.

She would have played with her few toys under the rays of a lamp rigged to provide her with as many of the benefits of natural sunlight as possible. Her trips through the Stargate were rare, as so few planets could remotely be considered hospitable, and even the loveliest could hold undetected dangers. As with everything else in her unique life, she would have no real idea what she was missing.

She would have heard every story, every song, every riddle, or joke or pun that any crewmember thought was suitable to her current age and understanding. She would hear them many, many, many times.

From the time she could toddle, she would have walked upon the Earth in the bodies of a series of young women, none of whom ever volunteered twice to become small and powerless on her behalf. She wouldn’t understand what was happening at first, naturally, but she was never afraid. A child of the stars accepts what comes.

Carmen would have helped her mother.

Nice depiction of Carmen's life. I hadn't thought about her visiting Earth using the stones. I can imagine that would be a unique and interesting trip for both parties involved.

Thank you! Once I thought of Carmen using the stones, I found the idea so fascinating from all angles.

I love this. I always imagined her to be friend with Rush myself. And I never thought of her going to Earth.

Very nicely done!

Thank you! Rush obviously has a heart, somewhere in there, and I thought a baby might be just the person to touch it. :-)

Oh, that's so lovely, and very realistic... I never thought about her visiting Earth but it's a VERY intriguing train of thought. Down, evil plot bunny, down!

Heh, heh, so sorry about the bunny! I'm sure it's wandered away by now. *g*

Yes, I thought the prompt itself was intriguing, and every single angle about a small child using the stones has great possibilities.

Five things Carmen would have done growing up on Destiny

1. Carmen spent a lot of time with Chloe when she was little; after all, her mother was the ship's only doctor and her father was pretty much in charge. And so Chloe would let Carmen tag along with her.

Carmen would follow Chloe around, help with any calculations, and would do yoga with her in the observation deck.

Chloe loved looking after Carmen. She was like the cool Aunt and Carmen's best friend.

2. As Carmen got older, she would spend more and more time with Eli. Since there obviously wasn't a school on board, Eli decided to tutor Carmen in all the essentials and anything else she decided she wanted to know.

Eli turned out to be a very good teacher and Carmen was a fast learner. She had even decided to learn a little of everything to start with so she could help around the ship and, eventually, become like an apprentice in the field she liked best.

3. Rush was never the most sociable person on Destiny, but somehow, he really took to Carmen. She was inquisitive ad eager to learn, but she was also able to stay well enough out of his way.

She seemed to really like him as well. The two got on really well, much to her father's distaste. The union of girl and mentor, however, seemed to bring Young and Rush closer together until you could almost call them friends.

4. Carmen tried out all areas on the ship and finally decided to be an apprentice working with both Rush, and her mother. No one saw this as a problem as, since they weren't really going anywhere, time wasn't really an issue.

It allowed for some of the pressure to be taken off of Rush and Eli and also gave TJ some much needed help.

5. Carmen ended up going on to write Destiny's first novel. This was then distributed to every person on board for them to read if they wanted to. Which everyone did.

Eventually others decided to write books too. There was plenty of time on Destiny and so, pretty soon, there was an entire library of books; fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, all sorts. Eli wrote some text books and someone even found the time to write a joke book.

It turned out that Carmen was the ships major trend setter!

Re: Five things Carmen would have done growing up on Destiny

Carmen was a busy girl. And a trend setter to boot. I wonder what her first novel was about. And she brings Daddy and Rush into some degree of friendship. I wonder who wins more arguments - Carmen or her father. She doesn't sound like she spoiled either. Good kid.

Re: Five things Carmen would have done growing up on Destiny

Kids know who THEY like - just like cats they make their own choices. Once they decide they like you, that's it, end of discussion. Carmen seems to have made her choices, and surrounded by adults she would have matured very quickly, and that comes through beautifully in your story.
